The District Chairman of Kaabong, Gino Meri has appealed for more food support for the district following the biting hunger that has left over an estimated 200, 000 people in starvation.
Meri says there is urgent need for relief food to be sent to the starving population adding that most families registered failed harvest due to prolonged drought. He says cattle raids and death of livestock in the district have left families in dire need for relief food.
Last week, the Uganda Red Cross Kotido Branch supported the most vulnerable households in Kaabong each with 100, 000 shillings for purposes of purchasing food. This is after the Red Cross carried out an assessment on food security situation in Kaaabong, where most families are facing starvation.
The Red Cross Branch Manager for Kotido Moses Akol says they received financial assistance worth 95 million shillings from Red Cross Belgium operating in the Western Uganda to support at least 950 households in Loyoro, Lodiko and Kaabong East Sub Counties.
Akol said the Red Cross chose to give cash assistance in order to cater for human dignity and ensure recipients have unlimited accorded choice to buy the food of their own need.
Leaders have lauded the Red Cross for providing a timely assistance to the starving communities in Kaabong. Gino told URN that the assistance is timely but underscored the need for more partners to give more food assistance to the Community.
