The police on Tuesday foiled a rally that had been organized by the Mayor of Kawempe Emmanuel Sserunjogi protesting the continued detention of Kawempe North MP Muhammed Ssegirinya.
Sserunjogi had also invited the Leader of Opposition Matthias Mpuuga and other Shadow Ministers in the Parliament to Kawempe Moslem Primary School Playgrounds for the rally.
However, Police and the Army deployed heavily and surrounded the areas that access the playground. Sserunjogi was also blocked from accessing the venue.
He condemned the continued detention of Ssegirinya, Makindye East Member of Parliament Alan Ssewanyana and other NUP political prisoners who he said are rotting in prisons.
He also said that he is determined to organize another rally in Kawempe but this time around he will not notify Police.
Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana were arrested in September over murder and remanded to Kitalya Prisons. It is alleged that between the months of January and August last year, the two legislators and their accomplices, directly engaged in terror activities and aided sporadic acts of terror.
Court heard that while in various places in Uganda, with intents to intimidate the public for political, religious, social, or economic gains, the suspects indiscriminately involved themselves in murder and attempted murder of people.
The Deputy Police Spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan Luke Owoyesigyire denied that police blocked the rally. He said that they only deployed and the organizers failed to appear.
Residents of Kawempe have however expressed concern about the continued detention of the area Member of parliament.
Steven Nkambo accused the police of blocking the rally.
Firipong Alisabet a resident of Kawempe North also demanded the release of Ssegirinya.
