A woman who was found with 90 pellets of heroin drugs has been charged with unlawful possession of narcotic drugs and trafficking in narcotic drugs.
Carol Birungi was last week arrested by the Anti-Narcotic Police Unit at Entebbe International Airport. Birungi was found with the pellets concealed in her private parts destined for New Delhi-India.
Her arrest followed an intelligence report that Birungi together with others still at large, had in January smuggled Heroin drug palates from Ethiopia to Uganda using one of the porous borders in the Eastern part of Uganda.
On Tuesday, Birungi appeared before Entebbe Chief Magistrate Juliet Nakitende and denied the charges.
The Resident State Attorney in Entebbe, Janet Kitimbo, asked for an adjournment, saying investigations in the case are still ongoing. She is however optimistic that investigations will be complete by end of February.
Chief Magistrate Nakitende adjourned the case to February 28.
Last week, Charles Twine, the Criminal Investigations Directorate-CID spokesperson said that Ugandan females are usually lured by drug traffickers, mostly Nigerians who marry them and or initiate them into engaging in drug trafficking.
Entebbe Airport is one of the known transit routes for drug traffickers. For instance, in 2020, police officers seized 41.9 kilograms of illicit drugs valued at over shillings 1.7 billion.
Twine also noted that 7,328 people were arrested in the last two years for illegally buying, selling, and smuggling intoxicating drugs. He is thereby urging the public to be cautious because smugglers and drug traffickers keep upgrading their tactics to outsmart detectives.
