Justus Wanyama, the LC 1 chairperson of Bujwanga village in Bulwenge parish in Buhehe sub-county in Busia district is in police custody on accusations of abetting livestock theft. He is accused of conniving with unidentified thugs from Kenya to steal livestock in his area.
Mathew Tusubira, the Busia Deputy Resident District Commissioner ordered Wanyama’s arrest when residents implicated him at a security meeting at Sibona trading center. The meeting brought together residents and chairpersons of all the 14 villages of Bulwenge parish in Buhehe sub-county, which are battling rampant cases of livestock.
Tusubira says that he ordered the arrest of the village chairperson following claims by residents he is part of the racket of livestock thefts.
Hamphrance Opio and Charles Mangeni, both residents of Bujwanga village, says that they implicated their village chairperson because they severally witnessed him hosting an unknown people from Kenya at night before their animals would disappear.
Charles Wanyama Hasubeni, the Buhehe Sub county LC 3 chairperson, says that livestock theft has become rampant. He accuses some leaders in the villages at the border of fueling the theft, saying there is a need to investigate some of the leaders thoroughly.
Fredrick Asil, the officer-in-charge- OC Buhehe police post confirmed the arrest of the chairman, saying that he will help their investigations into the livestock theft. Ojambo Bubolu, the chairperson of Bulamba A village who was also implicated for abetting a crime is on the run.
Disappeared recording over 48 cases of livestock theft, none of them made into the police files. Asil appealed to residents to work hand in hand with the police to combat livestock theft in their area.
