A 40-year-old man in Kanungu district is on the run for deliberately cutting to death two children of his neighbor in revenge for his cheating wife.
The suspect identified as Edward Birungi, a resident of Kagarama village, Nyarutojo parish, Kambuga sub county is alleged to have cut eight-year-old Tracy Nabasa and Ian Owembabazi,3, all children to his neighbor Frank Kato.
Augustine Mutabazi, the Kagarama village LC1 chairman says that Birungi cut the children on Thursday afternoon at around 04:00 PM. Mutabazi says that Birungi while armed with a sharp panga went to Kato’s home and immediately cut the two to death.
The chairman says that Birungi was protesting and accusing Kato of having sexual relations with his wife (he declined to reveal her identities). Mutabazi also says that Birungi had two weeks ago divorced his wife after attempting to kill her on accusations that she always commits adultery with Kato.
Mutabaazi says that Birungi found children at home alone while Kato was in a nearby garden digging. He also says that before Birungi took off, he vowed to deal with Kato any time.
Elly Maate, police spokesperson for the Kigezi region confirms the incident saying that police have launched a manhunt for Birungi. Maate however expresses worry that locals may take the law into their hands since they were also angrily and armed with pangas traversing all nearby bushes looking for him.
Maate adds that the bodies of the deceased have been taken to Kambuga health center IV for postmortem. The case is registered at Kanungu police station under file number CRB 110/2022.
This is the first act of this nature to happen in Kanungu district. It also unfortunately comes soon after Uganda Police Forces through its Spokesperson, Fred Enanga told the public to stop taking adultery cases to Police because it is not a crime. Enanga rather said adultery is a civil matter. Enanga advised that adultery, can, however, be used as a ground for civil processes like divorce, separation, custody of children, and sharing of property.
