A 40-year-old man in Kanungu district who yesterday run away from his village after cutting to death two children of his neighbor in revenge against his cheating wife has been lynched by an angry mob.
Edward Birungi, a resident of Kagarama village, Nyarutojo parish, Kambuga sub-county cut eight-year-old Tracy Nabasa and Ian Owembabazi,3, all children to his neighbor Frank Kato on Thursday afternoon at around 04:00 PM.
Birungi used a sharp panga to hack the two to death while protesting and accusing Kato of having sexual relations with his wife. He found children at home alone while Kato was in a nearby garden digging.
After the incident, angry locals mobilized a manhunt until today (Friday) evening at around 06:30 PM when they found on him.
Elly Maate, police spokesperson for the Kigezi region confirms that Birungi was captured from Omunengo valley along Kanungu-Rukungiri road while sneaking out of the bush to run to the Rukungiri side.
Maate says that Birungi sneaked out of the bush not knowing that the locals were alert and monitoring every area. He also says that Birungi’s body has been taken to Kambuga hospital for postmortem.
Maate adds that however much Birungi had committed a huge crime, it was also very wrong for locals to lynch him. The case is registered at Kanungu police station under file number CRB 110/2022.
