Kibaale Police are hunting one of their own for Killing one person and injuring three others in a scuffle during the arrest of a defilement suspect.
The suspect is Manthon Okello, the officer in Charge of Kitutu Police Post in Karama Sub County. He is wanted for shooting to death Vincent Kirabo 31, and injuring William Igabura 33, Pascal Tumusiime, 26 and John Kirama, all residents of Hamugamba village in Karama Sub County.
Esther Tumusiime Adeke, the Kibaale District Police Commander explains that around 6 am on Sunday, Okello who was in the company of other officers stormed Hamugamba village to arrest Noah Mawagali, who is accused of defiling and marrying an underage girl.
It is alleged that when Mawagali noticed police presence around his home, he made calls to his brothers and relatives who rushed to block his arrest. According to Adeke, when the suspect’s brothers arrived, a scuffle ensued as the group protested the arrest of the suspect without the presence of the village LC 1 chairperson.
During the scuffle, Okello opened fire and shot Kirabo killing him instantly. He also injured three other people. Adeke says that scene of crime officers visited the scene, recorded statements and recovered evidence.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, says that they have launched a manhunt for Okello, who is on the run. Hakiza says that Okello faces charges of murder and attempted murder.
The deceased’s body is lying at Kibaale health centre IV pending post-mortem while two of the injured are receiving treatment at Emesco Health Center IV. Pascal Tumusiime has been referred to Mubende regional referral hospital for an operation to remove a bullet that is stuck in his chest.
