The African Union – AU have condemned Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, rallied the two leaders to establish an immediate cease-fire .
AU’s current Chairperson and President of Senegal Macky Sall, together with Mousa Faki Mahamat, the AU Commission Chairperson on Friday expressed extreme concern describing the Russian raid as” very serious dangerous created in Ukraine.”
In a joint communique, the AU rallied the two leaders to establish an immediate cease-fire and to open political negotiations without delay, under the auspices of the United Nations in order to preserve the world from the conflict.
“In the interest of peace and stability in international relations in service of all the peoples of the world, the Russian Federation should respect international law, the territorial integrity, and national sovereignty of Ukraine,” the communique read.
AU is a continental unification consisting of 55 member states, including Uganda, located on the continent of Africa, with its Headquarters in the capital, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
On Thursday, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a “special military operation” in Ukraine.
Russia’s Defence Ministry Friday said its forces had captured the strategic Hostomel aerodrome, just 7 kilometers m (4 miles) northwest of the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, and landed paratroops in the area.
The Russian military said that it will not strike residential areas of Kyiv and that Moscow was ready for talks if Ukraine’s military surrendered. Putin insists that the invading forces were looking to free the country from “oppression”.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy pleaded with the international community to do more, saying sanctions announced so far were not enough.
President Zelenskiy said 137 people, including 10 military officers, have been killed and 316 people injured so far.
