Phone manufacturing giant Apple has unveiled the new SIM card-less iPhone 14 lineup as well as updates to its Apple Watch and AirPods Pro on Wednesday at its first in-person event since the pandemic began.
The Cupertino-based company unveiled its next generation of iPhone models — comprising the iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.
Like previous Apple events, the Far Out launch event started with a keynote address from Apple CEO Tim Cook.
The company announced the new iPhone series with the following new features;
The new iphone 14 is 6.1 inches and the iphone 14 Plus 6.7 inches. They feature a longer battery life, the same chip as last year’s iPhone 13 Pro model (the A15), and a new camera system, including a 12 Mega pixel main camera with bigger pixels, a faster aperture, and improved sensors.
Other features include the front-camera autofocus capabilities; a new action mode that lets users keep videos stable while moving;
Bye Bye Sim-card
Apple has taken a bold step to remove the simcard slot instead opting for a digital, “e-SIM” card.
“eSIM makes things simple. You can activate your new iPhone or add carriers digitally, so you’re calling and texting in no time. And unlike a physical card, eSIM can’t be removed if your iPhone is lost or stolen.” apple revealed
Durability
The new iPhone has a Ceramic Shield which according to apple is;
“tougher than any smartphone glass. Water resistance. Surgical-grade stainless steel. 6.1″ and 6.7″ display sizes.”
Dynamic Island
The new Phone will feature a bubble called the “Dynamic Island,” at the top of the screen. This apple describes as
“both hardware and software and bubbles up music, sports scores, FaceTime, and so much more — all without taking you away from what you’re doing.”
The phones also boast a screen capable of intense brightness in sunny conditions.
“A display that’s up to 2 times brighter in the sun.” apple revealed
Cost
The new iphone 14 starts at $799 and the larger iPhone 14 Plus model starts at $899.
It is available in midnight, starlight, blue, purple, and Product Red.
Pre-orders begin on Friday, September 9, with availability for iPhone 14 beginning Friday, September 16, and availability for iPhone 14 Plus beginning Friday, October 7.
Satellite Communication
If you don’t have cell service or Wi‑Fi, the new iPhone lets you text emergency services over satellite.
The Phone will automatically detect the loss of cell and wifi connection and automatically connects you to the nearest satellite;
“iPhone front-loads a few questions to assess your situation — just tap to respond. Then it shows you where to point to connect to a satellite.”
“Once connected, iPhone automatically sends your answers, location, Medical ID (if set up), and battery level to a dispatcher.”
iPhone will show you where to point the phone to maintain your connection — and avoid obstructions such as mountains and heavy foliage.
Texting via satellite takes time. In ideal conditions, you can send a message in less than 15 seconds. Under light foliage, it can take more than a minute.
Car Accident Detection
The new iPhone 14 series phones will automatically detect when you have gotten an accident and alert emergency services and your immediate family or friends in your emergency contact list.
“iPhone 14 Pro can detect a severe car crash, then call 911 and notify your emergency contacts.”
Car crash detection on the Series 8 — which was rumored late last year — is enabled by a new three-axis gyroscope and “high g-force” accelerometer that samples data four times faster than the previous generation (and up to 256 gs of force). Leveraging an algorithm running on the device, along with the barometer, the Series 8 can detect crashes in most types of vehicles and automatically notify emergency contacts and services if the Iphone user doesn’t respond within 10 seconds,
How the phone detects that you have been involved in a car crash
Apple says the phone has been fitted with 1 million hours of real‑world driving and car crash data to help the phone’s AI recognize accidents.

The New Apple Smartwatch
In addition, Apple introduced an entirely new kind of smartwatch, the Apple Watch Ultra, which is targeting athletes, adventurers and other people who work and play in extreme conditions.
The Apple Watch Ultra boasts an impressive feature set along with an equally impressive price tag (though not as high a price as had been rumored.) Evolution not revolution is truly the aim with this watch, which starts at $399 for the GPS-only version.
Big changes include a new temperature sensor, geared toward helping women with reproductive planning, and a low-power mode that doubles the battery life.
