National Unity Platform President Kyagulanyi Sentamu Robert AKA Bobi wine has expressed support for the European Union resolution to halt the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project.
Kyagulanyi who was speaking at a special prayer (duwa) for the jailed NUP MP Mohamed Segirinya in Kawempe said the EACOP project has already been mismanaged by the government accusing the state of illegal evictions of people from the lands where the pipeline will pass.
“You know that these people, a small family clique always use state resources to buy off poor people’s lands whenever they know that a big project is coming by the time of compensation, they own all the land and government ends up paying them instead. That is exactly what they did for the oil, they didn’t even buy the land this time, they just chased people off their lands. That is what the European union based on to call for a stop of the ECOP project and I support them” he said
The Musician turned politician says the European Union has now cornered President Museveni.
“Have you ever seen president Museveni saying he wants to take a matter to court, Now he has said he is going to court(to fight for EACOP)” Kyagulanyi said
The 2021 presidential candidate also called upon all aggrieved Ugandans to join him in his campaign against the oil project.
“All of you who have been evicted wrongly, it is time for you to support the European Union resolution.”
adding that
“We want our natural resources extracted but we do not want it to go into the hands of a thief, We can not put our resources in the hands of a killer, we have never seen the oil agreements. Do not listen to to the so-called professors, they like using experts to confuse you. all that should matter to you is that the natural resources should benefit you as a Ugandan. You and Museveni have equal shares in Uganda.” he said
“I want to assure you that regardless of what Museveni does, he will not drill that oil.”
Referring to Thursday’s student protest against the EU resolution, Kyagulanyi also accused his nemesis President Museveni of using children for his own politics.
“Museveni can not even come here in Kawempe and appeal to mature people anymore, he has to go and use our children to protest on his behalf. Museveni killed over 200 people who were protesting.”
The EU Parliament voted by a majority of 334 to pass a resolution that seeks to compel Uganda, Tanzania, and Total Energies SE to delay the development of the proposed EACOP for at least one year.
The MPs cited major environmental and climate risks posed by the project. They said there is a need to find an alternative route that would not affect as many people and the ecosystem as well as a review of alleged human rights abuses, especially in Uganda.
