Kira Road police have identified four people who were clobbered in a video that went viral on social media on Friday. They are Benjamin Seruyange 30 and Jonas Kanyike 27, a hawker, both residents of Namungoona, Lubaga division in Kampala, and Everine Busingye 30, a bar attendant in Kyambogo, Nakawa division, and Mercy Namyalo, a resident of Kibuye, Makindye division, Kampala.
Angry mob members stripped the four naked and assaulted them at around 9:30 am on Wednesday for their alleged involvement in an attempted robbery at Ntebetebe zone along Northern Bypass. It all started when the suspects allegedly who were driving in a Toyota Hiace UBD 071P blocked Edward Himbisa who was driving a Toyota Probox UBK 019L at around 9:30 am. One of the suspects was allegedly armed with an AK47 gun.
The suspects allegedly ordered Himbisa out of his car, which he did. It is alleged that Busingye quickly entered the vehicle to drive it away but unfortunately Himbisa had stepped out with the keys. Himbisa locked Busingye inside and made an alarm that forced the armed thugs to flee from the scene. His accomplices tried to flee the scene and jump in their vehicle but other drivers blocked them.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, said that when Himbisa made an alarm pointing at the direction the Hiace had taken a driver of UAZ 027L and another in a Range Rover blocked the suspected robber’s vehicle. As a result, a mob started assaulting the suspects. Two people who watched the incident from a distance alerted Bweyogerere, Kireka, and Kira division police stations, which dispatched the Kira road 999 patrol that was on routine patrol.
By the time police reached the scene, the suspects were bleeding heavily and were rushed to Mulago National Referral hospital where they are under the watch of detectives. Northern Bypass has had a number of robberies. Some spots such as Kiwatule, Kyebando, Naalya, and Kireka flyovers have long been known as dark sports where thugs often target motorists in the evening and early morning hours. Several security agencies have deployed personnel on the Northern Bypass to stop the attacks in vain.URN
