The police in Gulu City have arrested a Local Defense Unit (LDU) deserter over the death of a three-year-old child.
Geoffrey Latoo alias Acid, a resident of Lapeta Village in Bardege-Layibi division in Gulu City was arrested on Monday by the police from his hideout following the death of Elizabeth Lamara.
According to the Police, Latoo on Saturday night torched a grass-thatched house belonging to his jilted lover Lucy Aceng.
David Ongom Mudong, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson told URN that Latoo who is believed to be in his early 40s had wanted to spend the night with Aceng but she rejected which angered Latoo.
Aceng is the grandmother of the deceased child and she was taking care of her because her mother Eunice Apio was away for studies in Abim district.
Mudong added that Latoo was in hiding until Monday evening when he was arrested. He is being held at Gulu East Division Police Station where an offense of arson causing death is preferred against him.
In her statement to police at Unyama Police Post, Aceng said that on a fateful night she left Lamara in her house and went to buy soda in the nearby Unyama Trading Centre. She adds that on the way, she met Latoo who asked that he will sleep in her house, however, Aceng refused and Latoo left shortly.
Aceng added that she was shocked to find her house burning, but it was too late to rescue the child.
