Uganda’s top female athletes have confirmed their preparations ahead of the forthcoming National Cross Country Championships. They are Peruth Chemutai, Stella Chesang, Sarah Chelangat, Mercyline Chelangat and Zena Chebet.
The athletes confirmed their readiness to participate in the National Cross Country Championships scheduled for December 10th, 2022 on Wednesday, October 26th from their various training Areas. Both Chemutai and Mercyline Chelangat are training in Kapchorwa while Chesang and Sarah Chelangat are training in Iten in Eldoret, Kenya.
Peruth Chemutai, the first Ugandan woman to win an Olympic medal, says that she decided to debut in the national cross country championship as part of her preparation for the World Cross Country Championships. “I am an Olympian and I also want to be a world cross-country champion,” Chemuutai Told URN in Kapchorwa.
Stella Chesang, the 10,000, 2018 Commonwealth Gold Medalist explained that the debut is a sign of solidarity and an encouragement for other female athletes. “As ladies, we are still few in the sport and when I take part in such a National Championship, I motivate young female talent,” she said. Dominic Otuchet, the president of the Uganda Athletics Federation says the confirmation of the athletes is a sign of discipline and patriotism.
“This championship is going to be one of the events on our calendar that will have all the top cream, both male and female athletes,” Otuchet said. According to Otuchet, Uganda will have the best team selection to represent the country in the World Cross Country Championships slated for Feb 2023, in Australia. URN
