The police are investigating the circumstances under which gunmen laid siege on Nakulabye Police station which was averted by the alert officers.
The official account of the force says they fought back against a gunman who was approaching the station in a suspicious manner firing bullets towards him as he fled the scene on Wednesday at about 4:00 AM.
Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, said in a statement that the officer (names withheld) was on station guard duty when he spotted one man moving towards the post from the western side.
“It is alleged that one of our officers (names withheld) was on duty as a station guard when he spotted an unidentified armed person approaching the station from the western direction.” owoyesigire said
This is the third incident of attack on police in a space of three weeks which has left four officers shot dead.
A fortnight ago, two officers were killed in an attack on a police station in Luweero District while another incident took place in Jinja a week later where one army officer was killed as the gunmen made off with two guns.
Yesterday the police said that the officer immediately discharged bullets toward the alleged attacker forcing him to flee, abandoning an AK47 Magazine with 5 rounds of ammunition.
A team of investigators with the help of canines followed the direction the attacker took but unfortunately, they could not successfully trace them.”
Owoyesigire says that investigations on the matter are still ongoing in order to arrest the assailants.
