Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago today addressed a hard hitting press conference at City Hall Kampala.
In a very combative mood, he highlighted the rot in Kampala which he said is being perpetuated by a cartel ranging from inflating the costs of Road works of up to UGX 14B per kilometer, attempts to buy 10 acres of land at whopping 100 million dollars to purportedly settle vendors to illicit collections of colossal sums of monies from Markets, Boda Boda and Taxis.
He said that despite severally raising these concerns with the IGG and other accountability bodies, no tangible actions have been undertaken because of the state protection and patronage the cartel enjoys, adding that while City’s Infrastructure is in deplorable state and vendors have no work spaces, the Mafia continues in its mission to take advantage of the plight of the people of Kampala to enrich themselves.
He said that because of his unflinching and resolute stand on these matters, he has suffered and bore the brunt of state persecution, impeachment and now blackmail, hence calling on Parliament through the Leader of opposition to further carry out a probe in to actions of these cartels in Kampala City.
The Lord Mayor in a no nonsense attitude said that he has already filed an action in court against New vision newspaper and said he will not hesitate to do so against any other persons who maligns him.
