The Vice President Maj Jessica Alupo has said that President Museveni will run in the 2026 elections for the highest position of the land.
Speaking at the celebrations to mark 35 years of Entebbe Church of Uganda Archdeaconry on Sunday, Maj explicitly made it clear the President will indeed be campaigning and that he has the full backing of the NRM party.
“President Museveni will still be with us in 2026 and he will contest and be there after the elections. Please, support him like you have always done,” she said.
The Vice President’s remarks come at a time when Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has publically and using his social media pages showed interest in standing for Presidency come 2026.
Although he said that the time for campaigns has not yet arrived, NRM secretary general Richard Todowng said recently that, “President Museveni is the ruling party’s candidate for the forthcoming 2026 general election having been endorsed in 2019 by the Central Executive Committee, the party’s top organ.”
On October 3, 2022, Ms Alupo, Internal Affairs Minister Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire, and Defense Minister Vincent Sempijja signed a letter of support for President Yoweri Museveni’s re-election in 2026. This endorsement was made while attending the belated Mitooma District Youth Day celebrations at Bubangizi secondary school playground.
President Museveni who has been in power since 1986 and he will be 82 years old when the 2026 polls come around.
