National Unity Platform (NUP) leader Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine together with opposition leaders were denied access to Mulago Hospital where Makindye West Member of Parliament Allan Ssewanyana was allegedly admitted in a critical condition on Friday last week.
“This morning, we visited Mulago Hospital where we went to check on Hon. Allan Ssewanyana who has been admitted there in a critical condition since Friday. Unfortunately, the police blocked us from accessing him,” Bobi Wine said on his tweeter handle.
Ssewanyana and Muhamad Ssegirinya , the Kawempe North Legislator have been in jail for more than a year on several charges including murder, attempted murder, aiding and abetting terrorism, stemming from 2021 murders in greater Masaka spate of killings that left more than 25 people dead at the hand of machete wielding gangs.
However, last Friday, news spread around that Mr Ssewanyana had been rushed to Mulago Hospital under critical condition following a serious medical condition that is yet to be identifies.
Mr David Lewis Rubongoya, the NUP Secretary General said that police denied them access to the MP Ssewanyana because they didn’t get permission from prisons top bosses.
“They blocked us and they didn’t give us many reasons, they said we needed clearance from above basically and we left. They said they didn’t have permission to allow us, we needed a commission from above,”Mr Rubongoya said.
He also added that they are not sure of Mr Ssewanyana’s health condition by press time but were told he’s in a critical state that is why he was taken to Mulago Hospital.
Mr Luke Owoyesigire said that this issue of who to give access and who to not is an issue for prison services not police Ssewanyana being a suspect under prisons custody.
“Then that is an issue for prison services not police, he’s a suspect under prisons custody. When he’s taken to Mulago it should be a prison service to handle whom to allow to visit him and whom not to allow,” Mr Owoyesigire said.
