MPs Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya of Makindye West and Kawempe North respectively have not been produced in Masaka High Court where they were supposed to appear before court for a bail application.
After spending close to an hour in the court chambers the Judge Lawrence Tweyanze together with State attorney Richard Birivumbuka and Erias Lukwago the lead lawyer with his team addressed the press and said that the judge didn’t have any clear reasons as to why the court didn’t sit and MPs were not being produced in court on the due date which was today January 24, 2023.
“Both honorables were not produced before court with the state assigning no reason whatsoever but court wasn’t ready to entertain the matter today and they had planned for a mention of the bail application not hearing like it was earlier communicated,” Lukwago said.
The State Attorney told the judge that he wasn’t ready for the hearing of the criminal matter saying it would be too exhaustive for both sides to have two trials at the same time so he suggested that the Kampala files should be handled first before they can concentrate on Masaka files.
He also added that court has ordered Mr Ssewanyana Allan one of the accused to be accorded specialized medical treatment as his health state is allegedly ail according to the leaders of his party and that he was reportedly sneaked into Mulago hospital on Friday.
Case has been fixed for hearing on February,13th 2023 and one of the defense lawyers, Counsel Caleb Alaka is hopeful that their clients will be granted bail.
“The good news is that we are going to have a hearing which will not be prejudicial, we are going to have a bail application handled and if it all goes well we are optimistic that the duo will get bail”
Makindye West MP Ssewanya together with Ssegirinya Kawempe North Legislator have been in jail for more than a year on several charges including murder, attempted murder, aiding and abetting terrorism, stemming from 2021 murders in greater Masaka spate of killings that left more than 20people dead at the hand of machete wielding gangs.
