Atleast three Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers were injured yesterday Thursday 23rd March, 2023 following the attack made on the engineers on duty who were renovating the Namboole National Stadium.
According to the defence spokesperson, the incident involved some individuals who were led by vice Chairman Kawooye Godfrey and another person identified as “Masada” of Katooke Zone who also escalated the chaos with defiant encroaches on the government land.
“Chaos ensued and three of our soldiers were injured including Private Jackson Masereka whose fingers were cut by panga welding gangs,” Col Deo Akiiki, the deputy defense spokesperson said in a statement.
These engineers were surveying on part of the land that hosts Namboole Stadium Complex whereby they were angrily attacked by the encroachers with machetes, stones, arrows and bows.
In early February this year, the settlers on the premises of the stadium were given upto 15th Feb, 2023 to vacate inorder for the work on the stadium to begin.
The deputy defense spokesperson says that they will continue to do their work and will not stop despite the acts of provocation by the errant and illegal encroachers on the property.
“We have beefed up security at the stadium and call upon citizen to respect public property in order to avoid unnecessary injuries and loss of lives,” Col Akiiki said.
However, the UPDF together with the police are investigating the incident to get the culprits who were involved in the saga.
