Police FC will play at the finals of the 49th edition of the Stanbic Uganda Cup for the first since their formation in 1965 on Saturday June 3, 2023 in Lira District at the Akii Bua Stadium.
One-time League champions, Police FC qualified for its first final of the Stanbic Uganda Cup after eliminating Big League counterparts, Adjumani TC FC on an away goals rule.
The first leg was played at Kavumba playground on the May 15, 2023 as the cops secured a win courtesy of Hassan Kikoyo’s lonely penalty goal in the 7th minute of the game. The cops later made a long trip to Adjumani for the return leg where they lost 2-1 but sailed to the final on the away goal rule aggregate(2-2).
Police head coach Angelo Lonyesi’s boys will face a strong opponent in Vipers SC, a side that has now reached this stage 3 times in a row, winning one against BUL and losing to BUL in last year’s edition. The Venoms will be eyeing to complete a double this season after being crowned the StarTimes Uganda premier league champions last week on Saturday but the cops have a chance to block this.
Talking to media about the final, Lonyesi said, “The game of football is played by 11 players against 11. This system of saying we are in the Big League and they are in the top tie. If you’re to compare this season, the Big League has been so competitive compared to the Super League and my boys are willing to play their hearts out on Saturday.”
“We have come from very far to this stage though we have met some challenges like Long journeys, Yes Vipers SC has now managed to reach back-to-back finals but we are also ready for the challenge because we have been preparing for the final. Personally of course I fill very happy to reach this stage final because every player in Uganda would like to play Uganda Cup final so I thank Allah for this opportunity and I pray that I have a good game on that da,” Police FC forwards Male Reagan.
Police FC finished 4th on the FUFA Big League log with 54 points missing out on promotion to the top tier by 3 points.
