A 58-year-old Police officer has shot himself in Nsambya police barracks over suspected domestic problems.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire has identified the officer as Corporal George Drandi, who was attached to the Very Important Persons Protection Unit-VIPPU. He shot himself on Monday morning inside his place of residence at Nsambya Police Barracks.
“The investigating teams have visited the scene and recovered the rifle that had been assigned to the deceased with 29 rounds of ammunition,” Owoyesigyire said. He added that the body has now been taken to the city mortuary for a post mortem, and investigations are ongoing to establish the actual reason that could have led him into ending his life.
“We’re currently talking to the family to ascertain information indicating that he had an impending domestic issue with the wife and other family members in the village,” he noted. Corporal Drandi was only left with about two years to retire from the Police Force.
In November last year, Police constable Nyeko Bosco Mwaka attached to Aviation Police in Entebbe killed himself by shooting under similar circumstances.
In 2017, Godfrey Sabiiti, who was also attached to Protection Unit-VVIP in Kampala also killed himself after shooting his wife dead. Investigations indicated that Sabiiti who was residing in Nsambya barracks killed his wife before turning the same gun at himself after testing positive for HIV.
