Fifty-two-year Alfred Obua, a resident of Tekulo Obia village, Ayamo Parish in Lira District has earned himself a four-month jail term for intimidation and threatening violence. The Lira Grade One Magistrate, Pamela Ariakot convicted Obua on his own plea of guilt on Monday.
The court heard that Obua was arrested in November last year for trespassing in the garden of Richard Opio with the intention of intimidating him and threatening to stab his wife, Paska Akello with a knife. Obua pleaded guilty and prayed for a minor punishment like community service, saying that he has to take care of his family with six children since he is the sole breadwinner.
“I accept that I went into the garden of Opio Richard and intimidated him and also threatened Paska Akello in her home,” he told the magistrate. In her ruling, Ariakot explained that although the offences of intimidation and threatening violence attract a maximum sentence of four years, Obua acknowledged his mistake and did not waste the courts time hence the four-month sentence.
“Threatening to use a knife on someone can lead to death but the convict has not wasted court’s time and he appears remorseful,” she ruled.
