Residents of Bunabutiti Sub County in Bududa District are excited following the commencement of works for a gravity water scheme project.
The 300 Million Shillings project will be executed in three months and shall serve more than 300 people in Bunabutiti Sub County.
Here, residents spend over one hour moving to fetch water from the only stream they share with animals.
Issa Bukoma the Bududa District Engineer says that each household is expected to contribute 50,000 Shillings for connection and maintenance of the project.
He, added that they plan to extend the project to some water-stressed areas.
Sam Tongo, a residents said they hail the district for bringing the water project closer saying this will help to reduce on the distance they have been moving in search for water.
Gorreti Watsemba, another resident, said they when it rains the stream from where they fetch get contaminated due to erosion of the soil which starts at the source collecting dirt all the way.
Another resident, Paul Nambale, hailed the district saying they have been using contaminated water for drinking, bathing and other domestic needs and above all fetching it kilometers away from their homes.
Blakiseta Kigai said there are over 500 people who come to fetch water from one stream in the area something that makes them to wait for long before they go home.
Milton Kamoti Wasunguyi, the Bududa district local council five chairman asked residents to embrace the project and not to cut the pipes like others in some places do because the same water is meant to help them.
Despite the 23 billion shilling Bududa Nabweya gravity flow scheme project, some communities in Bududa district are still grappling with water scarcity.
