His Grace Nectarios Kabuye has been enthroned as the new Orthodox Bishop of Gulu and Northern Uganda.
The ceremony was held on yesterday at St Lavertios Church in Koro Rom Village, Bardege-Layibi division Gulu City. It was attended by Vice President Jessica Alupo among other religious and political leaders.
Bishop Kabuye replaces His Grace Silvester Kisitu, the first Bishop of the Diocese of Northern Uganda who was last week enthroned the new bishop of Orthodox Diocese of Jinja and Eastern Uganda after serving in Northern Uganda for barely two years.
Bishop Kabuye who will be in charge of the Acholi, West Nile, Karamoja, and Lango Sub Regions was appointed on the 17th October 2021 by his Beatitude the Pope and Patriarch of Alexandria Theodoros II during his visit to Africa.
He was unanimously elected the Bishop of Northern Uganda by the synod on 12th January 2022.
During the enthronement, Vice President Jessica Alupo who represented President Yoweri Museveni implored Bishop Kabuye to use his prophetic duties to fight poverty from the Acholi sub-region.
Alupo who also delivered a vehicle to the Bishop urged the Bishop to rally his flocks to embrace government programs meant for development, promote social-economic change and improve household income.
Through Alupo, the President also urged the new Bishop to campaign for tree planting in the Northern Region and de-campaign environmental destruction.
John Baptist Odama, the Chairperson Acholi Religious Leaders Peace Initiative (ARLPI) also asked the new Bishop to embrace peace, love, and unity among the people.
Betty Aol Ocan, the Gulu City Woman Member of Parliament on her part urged the Orthodox Church to promote education and better health services.
In response, Bishop Nectorious Kabuye noted that his service will dwell on developing human capital and fighting poverty from the Acholi Sub-region which currently stands at 68% according to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS).
