Police in Kiruhura district have arrested one of their own for shooting and killing one Boda Boda rider and injuring another during an attempted mob attack on Kikatsi Police post.
The incident happened on Friday evening at Kikatsi Trading Center Kikatsi Sub County.
The Police officer identified as SPC Emmanuel Tumwine who reportedly shot the Boda Boda rider is currently held at Kiruhura Central Police Station.
Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson has identified the deceased as Innocent Nabaasa, while the injured is Moses Nasasira, a 28-year old mechanic and resident of Kikatsi trading centre.
Kasasira says a mob of Boda Boda riders with intention of lynching a suspected motorcycle thief, a one known as Kadu Mukasa, a resident of Ssembabule district was arrested and handed over to Police by Boda Boda riders in the company of the area local defence after being suspicious of his intentions.
Kasasira says as Police officers were carrying out due process of interrogating the suspect a group of other Boda Boda riders who had been called to rescue their colleague became unruly attacked the Police post and tried to grab the suspect from Police custody.
He says the actions of the mob forced SPC Tumwine who was on duty to shoot bullets in the air to disperse the crowd but they kept advancing towards the officer who ended up shooting two of them.
Obed Mugarura, a Boda Boda rider at Kikatsi trading centre says motorcycles have been disappearing from the garage where the accused was seen standing for more than five hours and had no motorcycle to repair in the garage.
He says when asked about his motives Mukasa failed to explain, the reason he was handed over to the police.
Kasasira says three motorcycles registration numbers UFB700Z, UFL396C and UFD777E that were abandoned by the mob were impounded and a gun used in the shooting type AK47 UPF No.4756-128133363 with 27 rounds of ammunition found at the scene was exhibited as investigations into the incident commenced.
The shooting happens a few days after an soldier from the elite Special Forces Command – SFC shot dead his girlfriend and later turned the gun on himself taking his own life.
Dickens Nuwamanya, 27, from the Special Forces Command 5th Brigade in Ruhegyere Kikatsi Sub County killed his girlfriend Patience Kamarembo.
