The Bishop of Gulu Archdiocese John Baptist Odama has called on parents and stakeholders to invest on the spiritual upbringing of the young people in order to become better citizens.
Bishop Odama says young people should be educated to promote and practice the spirits of love, forgiveness, truth speaking, respect and discipline in order to become better citizens.
This he says will deter young people from perpetrating violence, hatred, selfishness, greediness, being corrupt and indulging in criminal activities and instead become respectful and God fearing people who value humanity and promote each other.
The Bishop was on Sunday addressing hundreds of youths, elders and stakeholders from the Acholi Sub region who had converged at Attiak Catholic Church in Amuru district to celebrate this year`s catholic youth day commemorated on every Palm Sunday.
He said that it is the responsibilities and duties of teachers, local leaders, opinion leaders, parents and guardians as well as church leaders through their different platforms to instill morals in youth.
Bishop Odama also asked elders to desist from exposing the young people to violence and conflicting environment, something he says have pushed the young people into criminal activities, sufferings, and being victimized.
Rev. Fr. David Okello Opiro, the Diocesan Youth Coordinator for Holy Rosary Church says proper upbringings and spiritual righteousness are key factors for the young people.
This has come at a time when many young people in the Acholi Sub region have been implicated in criminal activities like rape, defilement, burglaries, highway robberies, house break-ins, drug abuses and theft among others.
One of the youth, Grace Atim from Pabbo Sub County agrees that spiritual upbringing is key to one`s better and holy life free of criminal activities.
