Traders and Wakiso Sub County officials are embroiled in a row over the award of a tender for Bulaga Market.
The traders accuse the Senior Assistant Secretary, Sylvia Nakyeyune of fraudulently awarding the tender. They claim that the tender was granted to a person who does not understand the market operation and who is mistreating them and demanding exorbitant fees.
Joweria Nansamba, a trader says that she has been paying dues for the last 15 years. She wants the authorities to intervene in the row saying that they were denied the tender and instead awarded to a group of 3 people.
According to Nansamba, the traders are asked to pay between 30,000 and 90,000 Shillings per month which is too high compared to the nature of their business.
Charles Kabanda, the LCI Chairperson of Ssumbwe says that the removal of the tender from the traders was unfair and that it has led to the decline in the hygiene and sanitation of the area. He appealed that the traders be given a chance to manage their market.
Kabanda demanded that a proper procedure be followed in the market management and the traders be given priority to be able to manage the market for the safety of everyone.
Eddie Jjuuko, who was awarded the tender, said that nothing can be done because the tender was awarded and it cannot be reversed.
The leaders asked the district authorities to revisit their decision. Abu Batuusa, a councilor representing Ganda Parish said there is a need for a review of the management plan for the market. He said that the matter will be presented to the sub-county council and a resolution to be passed.
Edward Kato, the youth councilor at the sub-county said that there is a need for harmony between the sub-county and the traders.
Kato protested against the filth in the market and the disharmony saying there is a need for the sub-county authorities to rethink their decision.
Wakiso Sub County Speaker Hakim Mugalu asked the traders to stay calm and continue working as they intervene in the matter.
