Unlike other players, Peace who plays for Bartercard Surrey Storm in the Vitality netball super league, England is the only player who missed out on the preparations for the games. The team under the stewardship of veteran coach, Fred Mugerwa, kicked off preparations earlier in May 2022.
The netball contingent arrived in Birmingham Monday and pitched camp at the Chamberlain tower. After joining the team, Proscovia said that although she failed to be part of the earlier preparations with the team, she has been active in competitions and expects to fit in easily.
The Team captain further explained that, unlike the last edition of the championships (2018) where players had little experience with the games, the She Cranes is now equipped with experienced players who can battle any opponent.
Proscovia will captain the squad together with Joan Nampungu as her deputy. The other players are Mary Nuba, Norah Lunkuse, Stella Oyella, Jessica Achan, Irene Eyaru, Shafie Nalwanja, Shadia Nassanga, Sandra Nambirige, Margaret Baagala, and Hanisha Muhammad.
On the court, the She Cranes will rub shoulders with some of the Netball Power Houses in group B including defending champions England, New Zealand, Malawi, Northern Ireland, Trinidad, and Tobago. Uganda will open its campaign on July 30th, 2022 against New Zealand before taking on Trinidad and Tobago on July 31st, the following day.
The She Cranes qualified for the games by virtue of their World Netball ranking as of 31st January 2022. Uganda ranks 6th globally and 2nd on the African continent below South Africa and above Malawi. She Cranes earned this after finishing second in the African Netball championship and winning the Africa Pent series.
Mugerwa’s team is eager for an improved display compared to the last edition of the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia, where they finished sixth after falling to South Africa 53-42 in the play-offs to determine who takes the fifth and sixth spots.
