There was a poor turn-up in Amukaru Cattle Market in Soroti City on Wednesday. Amukaru weekly market operates on Thursdays but the authorities brought it forward because of the Soroti East by-election that is underway.
Susan Ikeris, a second cloth trader says she couldn’t sell anything because of low turn-up in the market. She said that most traders and customers were taken unawares by the change in the market day.
Michael Ebiaru, a resident of Busitema residence in Arapai, said that he failed to get irish potatoes because the suppliers didn’t show up.
But the weekly market vendors were not alone in making loses on Wednesday. In Soroti City, a number of vendors told our reporter that the by-elections have affected business in town. Janet Namataka, a fresh food vendor in Soroti City Main Market, says that before the elections, she used to make over Shillings 200,000 everyday but from the time of campaigns, business has been down, sometimes forcing her to close with less than 50,000 Shillings.
Samuel Oiko, a chicken seller equally says that business has not been good during campaigns. He said that although people are seen in town in the evening, they are not able to engage in business like it was before.
However, hotels and guest houses have made good sales out of the Soroti East by- election. Esther Nambuya, a manager at OX’s Suits Guest House, says that for the first time after the COVID-19 pandemic, they have run short of guest rooms.
