The Mukono Grade One Magistrate, Peace Elizabeth Lamunu has ordered the officer in charge of Luzira maximum prison to take Asuman Kanangodawa, one of the key suspects in the Mukono robberies for proper medical examination and treatment.
She issued the directive Tuesday when Kanangodawa applied for bail to allow him to get medical help. The suspect told the court that he was brutally assaulted upon his arrest and when remanded, he was taken to a hospital where only an x-ray was done.
However, Lamunu rejected Kanangodawa’s bail application, saying that her court lacks the jurisdiction to entertain his prayers. She instead ordered the OC Luzira maximum prison to take him for proper medical treatment and adjourned the matter to September 6, 2022.
The case had come up for further mention. Kanangodawa is facing a series of robbery charges together with ten others in connection to robberies at Spice supermarket, schools, pump fuel stations, residential premises, and parking lots.
He appeared together with Ismail Ssekuburwa, Ramathan Kirumira, and John Kalyango. In early August 2022, the matter came up before Grade I Magistrate, Maureen Mukoya for mention who rejected a request by Kirumira to plead guilty to the charges and enter a plea bargaining. Mukoya advised the suspects to forward their request to the High court, which has jurisdiction over their matter.
The matter was appearing in court for the third time for mention under different magistrates. The suspects first appeared before Grade I Magistrate Tadeo Munda in the same court on July 20, 2022. They later showed up before Mukoya, and now Lamunu who has further remanded them to Luzira maximum prison until September 6, 2022.
