Detectives investigating a foiled robbery at Edu Trinity Investment microfinance located at Masanafu, Lubaga Division, in Kampala, have established that the two guards attached to the facility were chloroformed.
It is reported that the guards were served biscuits and liquor in sachets laced with chloroform.
By the time the robbers who were armed with rudimentary weapons arrived at 4 am, the guards were unconscious.
“These guards have been checked and we have established that they were chloroformed. It is not clear who chloroformed them but they say after eating biscuits and taking their drinks they became unconscious,” a detective said.
Edu Trinity Investment was being guarded by John Mwesigwa and Abdul Majidu who were found sleeping with their hands, legs, and mouths firmly tied.
Patrick Onyango, the Kampala Metropolitan Police Spokesperson, said the robbers did not successfully conduct their mission because of the vigilance of the residents.
Onyango explained that when the residents heard the sound of breaking doors, they noticed that the guards had been tied by the thugs and were making their way into the offices. They sounded an alarm that forced the thugs to flee but one of them was arrested by the residents.
“The robbers could have executed their mission but the vigilance of the locals saved the situation. People started making alarms, they chased the thugs and stoned them until they disappeared,” Onyango said.
Aisha Nanyonjo, a resident said that incidents of robbers terrorizing the area using all sorts of weapons are common. “We are always alert because this area is full of idle youths who are doing all sorts of crime. We don’t know how we shall manage these thugs,” Nanyonjo said.
After arresting one of the thugs, leaders of Masanafu informed Old Kampala police which took the suspect into custody. The suspect later led police to the hideouts of his colleagues where four others were arrested and the gun that had been robbed by the guards was recovered.
“We want to appreciate the public for being brave. We want to appeal to security guards and all armed personnel to be very vigilant. There are people targeting armed personnel and this is the time you need to be very alert and careful. Do not fall asleep when you’re on duty,” Onyango said.
However, detectives and police are yet to establish how these guards were chloroformed. The two claim they just bought the biscuits and Waragi sachets. Detectives are also following leads that a colleague of theirs served them liquor sachets and biscuits.
Hours before the robbery at Edu Trinity Investment, a security guard identified as Ismail Asaka locked Kings Cross Hotel staff inside one room and varnished with 5 million Shillings that had been kept in the manager’s office.
