Furi Sub City has recorded significant progress across key sectors, transforming the lives of residents and boosting local economic activity, according to the sub-city’s manager, Dr. Peter Wako.
One of the most visible achievements has been the construction and rehabilitation of roads and bridges, which have enhanced connectivity and eased movement within the sub-city. These improvements have not only facilitated transport but also strengthened local trade and economic growth.
“The new roads and bridges have improved access to markets and services,” Dr. Wako said, noting that such infrastructure upgrades are central to the sub-city’s development strategy.
In support of national climate goals, Furi Sub City has implemented a Green Legacy initiative. This includes large-scale tree-planting campaigns and the development of public green spaces aimed at improving air quality, beautifying neighbourhoods, and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship.
“These green efforts demonstrate our dedication to climate-resilient urban development,” said Dr. Wako.

The rise of cottage industries has empowered local entrepreneurs and created jobs. These small-scale enterprises provide families with opportunities to generate income through production and trade, promoting economic self-reliance.
Dr. Wako emphasised that supporting such industries is a key part of the sub-city’s strategy to diversify its economy and reduce unemployment.
To support urban farming, the sub-city has constructed shade structures for livestock. These facilities improve animal welfare and productivity by providing proper shelter and improving management practices.
The sub-city has also expanded training programs for farmers in animal husbandry, helping to introduce modern techniques that improve livestock health and food security.
Community Spaces and Schools Expanded
Investment in social infrastructure has included the construction of new community gathering spaces to support civic events and promote social cohesion.
Meanwhile, school expansions across the sub-city have improved access to education, enabling more children to learn in safe and well-equipped environments.
Dr. Wako described these initiatives as part of a broader vision for sustainable and inclusive growth.
“Our goal is to improve the quality of life for every resident, while laying a strong foundation for the future,” he said.
The achievements in Furi Sub City reflect a collaborative effort between local government, communities, and development partners, positioning the area as a model for urban resilience and innovation in Ethiopia.
