School administrators and parents at Kibuga Primary School in Karusandara Sub County, Kasese District have decried the poor state of the facilities there ahead of the school reopening.
Schools across the country will open their doors for learners on January 10, 2022, after nearly two years of closure. But Kibuga Primary, a government-aided school with an enrollment of up to 562 pupils has only 10 desks as part of its infrastructure. Its classrooms are also dilapidated and need urgent patch-up.
Eric Byamugisha, the Head Teacher of Kibuga Primary School says the school has posted a worrying performance for more than two years due to its poor learning environment. He says nearly all learners in the school sit on bricks during classes, a standard that demoralizes many from attending classes.
Byamugisha adds that the school has a single five stance pit latrine, which is shared by both pupils and staff.
Because most classrooms don’t have shutters and windows, Byamugisha explains that whenever it rains they suspend classes and send pupils to seek shelter in the nearby homesteads. Without fixing these challenges, the head teacher says the standards for one of the largest schools in Kasese District will continue to drop.
The head teacher appeals to the district local government and other stakeholders for intervene as schooling activities begin.
Aidah Musimenta, a parent at the school, says that the lack of desks is not the only problem but also a number of pupils suffer from jiggers because the classrooms are not cemented. She says parents have written to the District Education authorities severally seeking support in vain.
Kasese District chairperson Eliphazi Muhindi says they have presented before the government, a comprehensive status report about schools in the district that detail those that need urgent face-lifting.
