Kyotera District Security Committee has approved the reconstruction of the dormitory at St. Johns Primary School -Kyotera which was destroyed in a January 15, 2022 fire.
The tragic incident left nine-year-old Savio Mark Sserugga, a Primary Four pupil dead, several learners injured and property burnt to ashes.
The Security officials had cordoned off the affected dormitory and halted renovation or reconstruction amid ongoing investigations. According to Paul Ssegawa, the school’s Deputy Head Teacher, they lacked space to keep the learners since the incident.
He noted that the reconstruction has begun but they are still soliciting support to ensure the building is completed in time. They estimate slightly above 30 million shillings to complete the dormitory and to also buy and replace the learners’ scholastic items and other properties which perished in the fire.
Hassan Hiwumbire, the Kyotera District Police Commander, says they were still waiting for the forensics team to do a final scene scanning of the said dormitory before allowing the reconstruction plan.
He adds that they are still investigating the incident although no suspect has been arrested yet. Hiwumbire further says they will continue deploying armed officers at the school every night to maintain the security of the learners.
He noted that they advised the school administrators to reconstruct the entire dormitory because the entire block was cracked and too weak. He adds that renovating the block alone will pause more danger to the learners.
