Police in Hoima have shot dead two family members during an intense land wrangle.
The deceased persons have only been identified as Rwothupe 40 and and a 2-year-old infant, Aron, residents of Nzorobi village in Nzorobi parish Kabale sub county.
Rwothupe was shot in the thigh while Aron was shot in the chest. They both died on the spot. They were shot on Friday morning at around 7:30a.m.
It is alleged that Rwothupe has been feuding with his mother identified as Tereza over a piece of land measuring an acre situated in the same area.
Rwothupe accused her mother of attempting to sell part of their family land.
This compelled the mother to seek the intervention of Kabaale police on Friday morning since her son had threatened to kill her over the piece of land.
Police rushed to the village on Friday morning to help settle the matter but Rwothupe resisted and attacked them using pangas and a hand hoe.
He equally accused the police for conniving with his mother to try to sell part of the family land.
When the situation became more tense, police were forced to fire live bullets in the air and in the process the two were allegedly hit by stray bullets.
Joseph Olama, the area LC1 Chairperson says his office had earlier tried to settle the matter among the family members but it went beyond his mandate prompting him to refer them to Kabaale police.
Nathan Ahebwa, the Nzorobi parish Councilor says currently the whole village is shocked after two of their residents have been shot dead by police.
He wants all the officers who participated in the shooting of the deceased persons investigated.
Julius Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson has confirmed the incident saying investigations have commenced.
According to Hakiza, a team of investigators from Hoima central police station has been dispatched to the area to thoroughly investigate circumstances under which the two people were shot dead.
The bodies of the deceased persons have been picked and taken to Hoima City mortuary pending postmortem.
