Residents of Abunguru village, in Adwir sub county Alebtong district are living without sanitation facilities . The village is one of the 15 villages in Okomo parish neighboring Kapelebyong district in the Teso sub-region.
With 84 households, the village has a latrine coverage of 30% during the dry season but during the rainy season, the latrines get filled with water and collapse. The area is prone to flooding and residents cannot dig deeper than 7 meters.
This has forced the community to erect temporary structures and shallow pits which are used for a few months during the dry season.
Susan Akao, a resident wants the sub-county or government to teach them new techniques of constructing sustainable pit latrines in such an area that is prone to flooding.
Polly Agilo, a female councilor says that her latrine which has lasted for two months now is still standing because it is built on a raised ground. She is currently looking for a nearby anthill on which she will construct the next latrine before the rainy season begins.
The entire sub-county is also grappling with the challenge of poor road network caused by the flat terrain, limited access to medical care, and lack of clean water, especially during the rainy season when roads are cut off by floods and spring wells contaminated by surface water respectively.
Moses Ematu, a businessman in Adwir Sub County says that they face challenges of transporting goods to the different markets because of the poor roads.
Jerry Obba, the Parish Chief Okomo explains that there is a need for the construction of good roads and deep wells.
