The prolonged drought in the Bunyoro sub region is causing havoc to cattle farmers as it has led to lack of pasture and water for their animals.
According to the farmers, the drought has diminished water supplies after all the few available dams have dried up. It has also led to lack of pasture.
Some animals have started dying as a result of the prolonged drought in the region.
The drought majorly started in December last year causing untold suffering to the herdsmen.
Though Bunyoro region received some little rainfall in January this year giving a sigh of relief to the herdsmen, it only lasted for a few days taking the region back to drought and adversely affecting cattle farmers.
James Muhangu, a cattle farmer in Lenju village in Bombo sub county in Hoima says between January and February, he has lost more than 10 cows due to lack of pasture and water.
Emmanuel Kazini, a cattle farmer in Kyangwali sub county in Kikuube district says they are forced to trek a distance of between 10 to 20 kilometers in search for water for their animals adding that all the available dams have dried up.
John Kandiho, a farmer in Ngwedu village in Buliisa says the current situation is tense, adding that the area is the hardest hit by the drought. He has lost 8 cows since January.
Between December 2020 and January 2021, Bunyoro region was hit hard by a drought that ravaged and affected hundreds of cattle farmers.
During this period, farmers in the region lost more than 200 cattle due to a shortage of pasture and water.
