One police officer was on Thursday killed and two others were critically injured after there vehicle was hit by another along the Gulu-Kampala Highway.
The deceased have been identified as Moses Opige while the injured are Jeremy Orombi and Defoe Komakech all attached to Oyam Integrated Highway patrol.
The incident occurred at Teitek Trading Centre at around 5:00 p.m when the stationary police patrol pick-up vehicle registration number UP 5470 which they were aboard was knocked by a speeding FUSO Truck registration number UBE 174R.
Patrick Jimmy Okema, the North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson says that the FUSO truck which was carrying charcoal from Gulu failed to stop and knocked the police vehicle which was ahead of them.
The injured persons are receiving treatment at Minakullu Health Centre in Oyam district while the deceased have been taken to the Lira Regional Referral Hospital morgue.
Okema says the police are on the lookout for the occupants of the FUSO truck since they fled and abandoned the vehicle after the crash.
Gulu, like other districts of Northern Uganda has banned commercial trading in charcoal due to the extensive depletion of the tree cover and degradation of the environment.
In 2018, Michael Lakony, the Amuru LC V Chairperson also sustained injuries when his vehicle was knocked from behind by a speeding truck carrying logs from Amuru district destined to Central Uganda during a break-neck chase to apprehend them.
The incident occurred at Jeng-Gari village in Pabbo Sub County along Gulu-Nimule Road.
Police say Lakony and two other law enforcement officers were chasing the trailer for illegally ferrying logs from the district.
