Parents of Bishop East primary school in Mukono district have bought 70 desks to help resolve the problem of congestion in the school. The parents agreed to contribute Shillings 15, 000 to procure the desks after receiving inadequate desks from the government through Mukono Municipality last year despite enrollment.
The school registered over 200 new learners bringing the number to 700 pupils. The School Head Teacher, Christopher Ssebaggala, says that he received 14 desks from the government. He has, however, says that about 40 percent of the parents contributed willingly and the school topped up the money to procure 70 desks.
According to Ssebaggala, they spent Shillings 80, 000 on each desk, which will now support over 200 learners.
Juliet Nabweteme, the Treasurer of the Parents Teachers Association-PTA is happy with the parent’s contribution, saying it will go a long way in helping to improve the learning environment. She applauded the management for putting the money to proper use, saying it energizes the parents to contribute towards other developments.
Moses Kikaawa, the Deputy Chairperson of Bishop East Primary School Management Committee, has appealed to the rest of the parents to contribute towards the purchase of more desks. Kikaawa notes that such offers from the parents directly benefit their children.
Mukono Diocese Secretary for Education, Rev. Geoffrey Kagoye appeals to other heads of schools and parents within Mukono, Buikwe, Kayunga and Buvuma districts to copy the initiative of the parents of Bishop East to also improve the study environment in church schools facing similar challenges.
He noted that more schools especially those under the government face challenges including the lack of desks and poor infrastructure.
URN has established that several other schools in districts of Greater Mukono are still struggling with insufficient desks. In many classes starting from pre-primary to primary four learners sit on bricks.
Mukono Municipality Center Coordinating Tutor, Monica Karungi appeals to headteachers to mobilise parents and old students to support their schools as they wait for the government instead of lamenting.
