Hailstorm has blown off the roof of Jagusi senior secondary school in Jagusi islands sub-county in Mayuge district. The storm blew off the roof on Friday night.
Jagusi sub-county comprises seven islands. The learners on seven islands are served by Jagusi senior secondary school. Currently, the school has 301 learners both in O and A levels. The school was constructed by area residents in 2015 because of the transport challenges.
The headteacher, Dennis Wanyama, says that the hailstorm also destroyed, desks, study materials and other sensitive documents. Wanyama says that they were preparing learners for the end of term exams when the disaster occurred, adding that the current situation does not favour them to continue with their daily school programs.
Asuman Mulondo, a resident within the area, says that the initiative had enabled their children to easily access secondary school education at an affordable cost.
“Prior to the construction of this secondary school, parents would hire a temporary shelter along the mainland, where our children would pitch camp to easily access education, which was financially constraining. We collectively constructed this school to kill such barriers,” he said.
Scovia Nantale, another parent attributes the problem to the lack of forests to act as windbreakers. She wants the responsible government agencies to construct strong structures, which can withstand hailstorms during heavy rains and other related adverse weather conditions.
Mayuge district LC V chairperson, Frank Tibagendeka, says he has directed a team of experts from the education and engineering departments to assess the situation and ascertain the extent of the damage to the school.
