Makerere University returns to the football pitch this evening after serving a four-year suspension for indiscipline. Makerere University football team will take on YMCA at the university’s main grounds in the Pepsi University League.
Felix Walex, a third-year student and captain of the Makerere University team notes with excitement that he would eventually get a chance to participate in his favourite sport.
“The university was suspended from the games when I was in my senior six. I was about to complete my course without taking part but happy it is here now and receiving this news was a big deal,” he said.
Makerere University head coach, William Kasozi, says that his players have eagerly practised for three months and are ready to compete this season. He is hopeful that the team will perform well despite his absence from the pitch for four years.
On Monday, Yudaya Nalubega, the Makerere University Guild Sports Minister congratulated the team for completing the suspension and cautioned the players against indiscipline, saying such cases will end up before the university disciplinary committee.
“This is to improve the discipline that is always displayed and to put a stop to more bans,” Nalubega wrote in a circular to students.
Uganda Christian University (UCU) are the defending champions of the Pepsi Football League, which was stopped midway in 2020 because of the COVID-19 outbreak. According to the organizers, the top team from different groups as well as the 2 best will proceed to the knockout stage. Group comprises UCU, Victoria, IUEA, KumiGroup
Group B: MUBs, Nkumba, Kisubi, MuniGroup C: Kyambogo, Bishop Stuart, Kabale
Group D: St Lawrence, YMCA, Makerere, Mbarara
Group E: Uganda Martyrs Nkozi, Ndejje, Gulu
