URN.On Tuesday, the Office of the Prime Minister dispatched relief food to avert hunger in the region. The relief is meant for families in Kaabong, Kotido, Moroto, Napak, Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit and Amudat districts.
Hungry families in Karamoja are yet to receive the relief food that was disbursed by the government.
On Tuesday, the Office of the Prime Minister sent relief food to avert hunger in the region. The relief is meant for families in Kaabong, Kotido, Moroto, Napak, Nabilatuk, Nakapiripirit and Amudat districts.
A survey by URN reporter in some villages in Moroto and Kotido districts discovered that although the food was sent to sub-counties, the leaders are distributing the food to their relatives, while the rest of the families are starving.
On Thursday, police recovered 18 bags of posho and beans that were hidden at the home of one of the LCII Chairperson for Camp Swahili in Moroto Municipality.
Micheal Longole, the Karamoja Regional Police Spokesperson said the recovered food was supposed to be distributed to the families in Loputuk sub-county.
A similar incident happened in Kacheri sub-county in Kotido district where many families missed food after some politicians took the food away.
Pascal Lomilo a resident of Nakapelimoru sub-county in Kotido district said the team which was responsible for the distribution of food was ignorant about the criteria of distribution and the quantity of food each family is supposed to receive.
“We don’t know the criteria being used to serve people this food, because families with a large number of children are given on 20kilograma of posho and beans while other families with only 3 members are given 30 kilograms of posho and beans, this not fair, “She said.
Mathew Lokut, another resident of Loputuk village in Moroto district said there was a need for the government to do a thorough audit on the food delivered in the region.
“Some officials who are even earning salaries also took food and as a result nine families in Lotiri village missed food, “he said.
Patrick Kotol another resident says that civil servants are also demanding relief food, which makes it hard to save the lives of the most affected persons in the region.
Paul Lokol, the LCV Chairperson Nabilatuk warned the leaders against hiding the food meant for vulnerable persons.
“It will be a curse for you the civil servant to hide food and cause the death of a person due to starvation, “he said.
