Some of the polling stations located in the business hub of Soroti city started voting past 8:00am.
The Soroti East by-election polls kicked off this morning with most of the polling stations opening for voters around 7:30 am. The Electoral Commission dispatched polling materials by 6:00 am. However, voting started late at some polling stations, especially at the public gardens, which host four polling stations.
The voting delayed in Central Ward Cell C&D and Cell A&B, Hardware Cell G and Juakali Cell G polling stations. Some of the polling stations located in the business hub of Soroti city started voting past 8:00am. In Teso College Aloet, voting had not started by 8:22am when our reporter visited. At most of the polling stations where voting delayed, the polling officials were asking the first 10 voters for the new voter location slips.
This caused an uproar at Public Gardens, which has more than 1,000 voters. Voters engage with polling officials at Public Gardens.
According to the Regional Elections Officer for Eastern Uganda, Deo Natukunda, there are 36,442 registered voters in 63 polling stations.
Moses Attan Okia, the FDC Candidate, says that more than 70% of his polling agents were picked up in a police raid on Elisian Hotel Wednesday night. Our reporter couldn’t independently verify the claim as none of the police bosses could be reached by the time of filing this story.
