URN.Although the exact cause of his death is still unknown, Kayunga LC V Chairperson, Andrew Muwonge, says that reports coming in attribute his death to hypertension and diabetes.

Kayunga district officials and the community are still in disbelief upon the sudden demise of the newly appointed Resident District Commissioner and former Uganda Muslim Supreme Council spokesperson, Hajji Nsereko Mutumba.  Hajji Mutumba passed on this morning at Rubaga hospital.

Although the exact cause of his death is still unknown, Kayunga LC V Chairperson, Andrew Muwonge, says that reports coming in attribute his death to hypertension and diabetes. According to Muwonge, available information shows that Hajji Mutumba felt unwell last night and was rushed to Rubaga hospital by the family but he couldn’t make it.

“As the district, we are so saddened for losing an RDC of his age, he has been a parent to us and a leader of dignity admired by everyone,” Muwonge said. President, Yoweri Kaguta Museveni appointed Hajji Mutumba Kayunga RDC in March this year.

The Jinja South Deputy Resident City Commissioner, Mike Sseggawa notes that Hajji Mutumba managed to attend and complete the just completed week-long retreat at Kyankwanzi and appeared to be in good health.

Collins Kafeero, a resident of Kayunga says few RDCs spare time to associate with people during their free time like Hajji Mutumba has been doing. According to Kafeero, Hajji Mutumba could drive within Kayunga town and park on the road, and move around greeting people as well as find out about their challenges.

Ashraf Muvawala Zziwa, the UMSC Public Relations Officer, says a detailed report about the death of Hajji Mutumba shall be released shortly after the necessary consultations. He explains that the council with the advice of His Eminence Sheikh Shaban Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda has advised to bury the deceased at around 4 pm.

“A meeting is still ongoing and once we decide to stick to His Eminence’s advice we shall have the funeral prayers at the national mosque before taking him for the final send-off. Shortly after the final meeting, we are going to make an official announcement.” Zziwa said.

Hajji Mutumba was in his late 60s. For years he was the mouthpiece of the Old Kampala-based Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, which he left in 2020 following the expiry of his contract. The late Hajji Mutumba founded the Kampala Cattle Traders and Butchers Association in 1982 and the Foundation for Islamic Development in 1986.

Besides his position in Muslim leadership, Mutumba has also been active in politics. He is known for joining the Uganda Patriotic Movement in 1980.
