Residents of Kanara Sub County in Ntoroko District are struggling to access health care services.
In 2019, floods submerged the sub-county following the raising water levels of Lake Albert. The floods affected the operations of Rwangara Health Centre III which is the only government health facility in the area.
Veronica Kasande, a resident of Rwangara Parish says the area is highly infested with mosquitoes which have seen malaria cases on the rise among infants. She says that the closure of the health facility has forced residents to use Buntugama Health Centre III, which is more than 30 kilometers away.
Gabriel Baluku, a resident of Kamuga Parish, wants the government to establish ambulance services in the six internally displaced camps to attend to health emergencies.
William Kasoro, the Ntoroko LCV Chairperson says that the government established a new health facility in Kanara to replace Rwangara Health Centre III, but it is still under construction.
Kasoro says the district is meeting high costs through conducting health outreach programs like immunization, and family planning services among others.
Rude Wilson, the District Health Officer Ntoroko says that the district health teams had transferred some of the medical equipment from Rwangara health Centre III to Butungama health III to ensure that the displaced persons access health services without complications.
He says that much as the people are struggling to access health services, the district health team is partnering with Save the Children and other development partners to ensure they conduct at least two outreach programs to attend to common illnesses like malaria.
