The High Court in Kampala has fixed October 10 2022 as the date to start hearing the case in which Ghetto TV Journalist Ashraf Kasirye sued security operatives for causing bodily harm.
On 18 November 2020 while in Luuka District, Kasirye was forcefully removed from a truck before assaulting and pepper spraying him as he was covering the campaigns of National Unity Platform-NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi.
Kasirye also says that he was tortured and injured on December 27 as Kyagulanyi was heading to Lwengo District for campaigns.
Kasirye also wants the court to pronounce itself by issuing a permanent injunction restraining security organs from violating the rights and freedoms of the press, people’s rights to practice their professions, and the rights against torture, and inhuman and degrading treatment.
When the case came up for hearing on Wednesday before Justice Musa Ssekaana, the court adjourned the case to October.
Last year, Kasirye withdrew his case seeking compensation for the damages caused to him during the elections.
Kasirye who wanted to be compensated with an unspecified amount of money withdrew his case against the Attorney General before the Civil Division of the High Court on grounds that he was in a bad state.
Kasirye is said to have been shot in the head and sustained injuries that saw him being admitted to Lubaga Hospital for many days.
