Vendors in Hoima Central Market want it closed over poor sanitation. This follows the blockage of the sewage line leading to the free flow of human waste around the busy market, which has resulted in a foul stench.
Friday David Kajura, the chairman of vegetable dealers in Hoima Central Market, says that they have repeatedly pleaded with Hoima City authorities for help in vain. Juliet Businge, a vendor says the foul smell has affected their sales since their customers are shunning the market.
Hassan Lubega, another vendor says the fecal matter has been flowing freely in the market for the last two weeks because of the faulty sewage line, which exposes the vendors to diseases like dysentery and cholera among others in case nothing is done.
Julius Ayesiga, the Chairman of Hoima central market management, says that they have engaged National Water and Sewerage Corporation and Hoima city authorities about the matter but they are yet to respond. He says that also lacks water and wants NWSC to rectify the mess in the connection that has led to an increase in water bills.
Brain Kaboyo, the Mayor of Hoima city has called on the vendors to stay calm, saying that the city authorities are engaging NWSC to address the sewer problem.URN
