Councilors of the ad hoc committee on garbage management of Nansana Municipal council want all companies responsible for collecting garbage tenders re-advertised over what they have termed as incompetence of the job owners at the moment.
The councilors say the companies that have the tenders lack capacity to collect and manage the huge wastes produced in the municipality which has kept the municipality with garbage littered all over the place, risking the spread of deadly Ebola Virus Disease.
Currently, two companies are charged with the work of collecting the garbage in the municipality including; Waste Systems Limited and Nako Green Belt Limited.
“Heaps of wastes along roads in Nansana as well as uncontrolled dumping of the wastes in almost every corner is due to the failure of the companies to perform their mandates as required. The whole municipality needs at least 8 trucks that have a capacity to carry 8 tons per session, unfortunately the collecting companies have less than 3 elf trucks for the whole municipality,” Mr Daniel Biyinzika the chairperson of the ad hoc committee on garbage collection in Nansana.
Findings from the municipality officials indicate that they produce over 15,000 tons of wastes per month and the collecting companies have the capacity to collect only 160 tons on a monthly basis.
“The companies also have no standard fares charged from the residents and sometimes you find out that people are made to pay exorbitant sums of money charged by the companies” Mr Biyinzika said.
The male youth counselor at Nansana Municipal council, Mr Muhammed Kayanja says the town clerk officer has failed to cooperate with the councilors on the committee which has slowed their efforts to ensure proper waste management in the area.
“We wrote three letters to the town clerk but he has not replied to any of them yet he is in charge of the technical work at the municipality. People are facing a number of challenges related to poor garbage management and we are likely to face the outbreak of diseases like cholera” Mr Kayanja said.
“I call upon the prime minister and the ministry of government to intervene and ensure that the town clerk can perform his work as expected so that we can have a clean environment in the our arear” he added.
