Busega Market’s Transformation Set to Boost Economic Growth

The New Busega Market

The transformation of Busega Market from a small, chaotic roadside hub to a large, organized marketplace marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s efforts to stimulate trade and economic activity. The upgraded market is poised to become a major catalyst for economic growth in Busega and the surrounding areas.

Built under the Markets and Agricultural Trade Improvement Programme (MATIP) with funding from the Arab Bank of Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), Busega Market’s development began in 2010 at a cost of $6.8 million (approximately 23.8 billion Ugandan shillings). BADEA financed the first phase of the project at $5.42 million (19 billion shillings), while the Ugandan government funded the second phase.

Despite its completion in 2022, the market’s official opening was delayed due to the absence of an access road. In August 2022, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja inspected the market, insisting that the access road be reconstructed and flaws such as poor paintwork and leaks on the upper floor be addressed before the market could open. Arab contractors were given a two-month deadline to rectify these issues, but by October, construction was still behind schedule. This prompted Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) law enforcement officers and the police to demolish nearly 30 temporary structures along the access road, yet construction did not commence until later.

In December 2022, the Ministry of Local Government handed over the market to KCCA, with plans to construct a road to improve access. Once completed, vendors are expected to occupy the market, with additional access routes planned. The registration of vendors is also nearing completion, ensuring a smooth transition into the new facilities.

Designed to accommodate 2,000 vendors, the new Busega Market offers a variety of amenities, including shops, stalls, open spaces, toilets, a parking lot, and ramps for easy access by People with Disabilities (PWDs). This modern market is one of nine earmarked for development under the MATIP project, with other markets like Wandegeya, Nyendo Market in Masaka District, and Hoima Central Market already completed and operational.

The transformation of Busega Market is anticipated to not only enhance the efficiency of trade but also create a more structured and attractive environment for both vendors and customers. As a result, local businesses are expected to thrive, contributing to job creation and increased income for residents in Busega and beyond. The market’s improved infrastructure and organization are set to have a lasting impact on the region’s economic landscape, making Busega Market a symbol of growth and progress in Uganda.
