At least 163 police officers in the West Nile region are set to retire in the next five years.
The officers are drawn from the districts of Koboko, Maracha, Terego, Arua City, Arua, Madi Okollo Nebbi, Pakwach, and Zombo.
On Thursday, the officers were taken through psychological orientation by a team from the Police headquarters and Ministry of Public Service.
John Geoffrey Musana, the Deputy Director of Human Resource Uganda Police Force who is heading the team said the orientation is aimed at ensuring that proper documentation is prepared early and educating the officers on how to put their retirement benefits to proper use.
According to Musana, the Uganda Police Force is set to establish a Retired Police Officers Association to roll out further guidance to retired officers. He said that ignoring psychosocial well-being will be a mistake.
Some of the police officers welcomed the orientation saying, many of their colleagues who didn’t prepare sufficiently for retirement died while others are suffering from abject poverty
Josephine Angucia the Police Spokesperson for West Nile said the training will help the retiring officers to use their resources well and live longer after work.
According to police records, between 500 and 1,000 Police officers are set to retire countrywide within the next five years.
